New Hunter Love on Wowhead
Posted July 14th, 2008 by Isobelle
I may be a little late on this, but I basically just noticed that Wowhead has a few cool additions for hunters on its site. They've added a few little features for pets; what kinds there are, what skills they can get, where to get them, along with rudimentary pet talent calculators. Check out the full text for a few screencaps, or just quit being a lazy ass and go check it out yourself.
First up is a general overview of the pets available in the game. I've recently rolled a hunter, and while I'm sure everyone already knows everything there every was to know (or ever will be to know) about pets, I kinda enjoy the simple layout of it all. I used to rely on
Wowhead also has
Another is the handy Pet Comparison Chart that has a lot of the information
Last up is the talent pages for each animal. While it seems pretty basic, I didn’t realize there was picking and choosing to be done for my pet. I’ve basically been training all the DPS skills of my Ravager (bite and gore), and bumping up its armor and stamina whenever possible so it can make a better tank for leveling and solo play. Come to find I can basically max the attacks, but will hit a wall at 9 of 11 for the STA and AC skills. Creative juggling will be needed if I decide to put points into shadow resist or whatever as well. My hunter is level 30. I’m sure I would have figured this out the hard way, but better to know up front, and be able to play with the calc instead of wasting gold ingame.
Hooray for wowhead. Any other tools out there that the normal noob might not know about? Pretty sure everyone on the planet knows about Thott, Allakhazam, and Wowhead. For warriors I always considered Cinderhelm’s rants to be crucial to understanding how to tank, and things like the Elitist Jerks Class Mechaincs Forums the best place to theorycraft, regardless of class. Anyone have any links you wish you knew about when you started, or can never believe that more people don’t know about them when you mention them in guild chat?

DPS spreadsheets for rogues (and I suppose other classes) are pretty sweet. But I guess you already know about those since you mentioned Elitist Jerks.
Thank you for the good info on hunters. I have already leveled up a couple, but it was kind of hard, looking back at it, because I did not know everything back then. For instance, I did not know you could train pet abilities, because it was not in the manual.
Also, I had a pretty tough time in instances, it seems. They are long and I would always run out of arrows at the end, and would have to tank, and I would die sometimes. It is lame how we do not have very many melee attacks. The axe never runs out of arrows, haha!
People would also yell at me because my pet would sometimes attack more mobs than the group was exactly ready to handle. It took me a while to figure out that aggressive mode is not just about dealing more damage. I thought, "Why wouldn't any hunter always have pet on aggressive, since that maximizes damage?" I have since learned the reality that while the pet's damage is indeed increased in aggressive mode, the pet also takes more damage, I guess like sime kind of berserk stance, so you have to time it right and not overdo aggressive mode.
Anyway, when I do my third hunter, I will refer to Wowhead more and I think things will go better. Thank you for letting me know about it.
the way pets get new skills is kinda both cool and annoying.
i like having to go track down a certain kind of dog to acquire Bite 4, but in the end, it's kind of awkward, since i just grab the animal, kill 10 mobs with it until i learn the skill, then abandon it right afterwards.
the poster above me is not alone in not knowing how that worked until late in the game. when i rolled my first hunter (made it to about 36 on that one), i was surprised to find level 70s on the forums that had gone from level 1all the way to 70 with the first cat they came across in the newbie zone. they didn't even understand the concept of the pet stable, and therfore were still running around doing 10-12 damage with bite rank 1 the whole time or whatever.
i guess i learned about having other hunters turn off aggressive stance and autotaunt way before i ever rolled a hunter myself, as i was a prot tank from the beginning, and having to tank with loose pets or random taunts being thrown around got old fast ;)
