Solo Guide to Obtaining the Best 2h Axe in the Game!
Two Handed Axe. 3.5 second Weapon Speed. A whopping 157 top end damage! Pure, unadulterated bliss in the form of 37.3 DPS! This baby can be yours for a simple run thru the Scarlet Monastery Armory that pretty much any semi-coherent level 60 warrior or shaman with an even partially functioning frontal lobe and at least one spell bound to their action bar can solo. Okay, seriously... even if you had no buttons bound, and just ran in there autoswinging everything, it really shouldn't be that hard for a 60 to pull off.
Why do I have such a stiffy for this Radiant Shard in Waiting? Take a look at that proc!
Chance on hit: You attack all nearby enemies for 9 sec causing weapon damage plus an additional 5 every 3 sec.
Are you kidding me? ALL NEARBY ENEMIES? Whirlwind hits only four additional enemies, has a ten second cooldown, only works in berserker stance, and has a cost of what some might call “much rage”. This thing costs zero rage, works in any stance, and will hit as many enemies as you can get into melee range before it procs.
Twinking / Guild Noob runs in lowbie instances just became a whole lot easier. Okay, they weren’t really difficult before, but this thing kinda breaks up the monotony. I know I’m gonna catch flack for this one, but seriously… this thing has its applications, and deserves one slot in your 80 slot inventory. Some people still carry around that silly staff from Gnomeregan that lets you breathe underwater, this one beats that thing out in the ‘will come in handy some day’ category hands down. My friend, Mirun, was the first to turn me on to it, and I laughed and called him names on vent for it. I kept laughing at him in Wailing Caverns as he was running my druid thru there for Fang set pieces. I stopped laughing when we did a BRD Emperor Run on our 60s with no mage, he pulled this thing out, and pretty much destroyed the Lyceum single handedly. We now have a shaman in the guild with one, too, and when they both get spinning, cleaves flow non-stop. Don’t get confused. They aren’t wearing this thing all the time, but every once in a while it comes out, and when it does… it’s got to be seen to be appreciated.
A few simple things to note about this thing: It procs All Day Long. It procs procs, which then proc a proc. We’ve seen it go 4 times in a row, which can be a good thing, or a bad thing. That’s like 20 seconds of whirlwind vortex love (when it re-procs, the 9 second timer resets, so you don’t get a full 4x9 out of it), but sometimes you want to turn it off. You can’t. It’s good in situations where the priest will survive if left alone for a few seconds, or where there’s a spare lowbie tank to throw an emergency taunt if needed. Worst case scenario is that it just procs forever, and everyone just stands on top of you as you spin. As long as no one else is doing anything, you will gain aggro, and kill whatever is coming.
It isn’t a level 60 DPS machine, but it isn’t a level 12 item either. At level 42, it’s actually not as bad as it sounds. Skills like Mortal Strike and Overpower, which deal damage based on “weapon damage plus x” will take a hit, but skills like Execute, Sunder, Revenge, and Bloodthirst will be working the same as before (okay, Bloodthirst will probably hit for less since you’re likely nerfing your AttackPower by using this instead of your Untamed Blade or whatever). We joke about putting Crusader on it, but unless orbs start falling from the sky, it probably won’t happen.
| | | Your mission, should you decide to accept it… |
This isn’t meant to be a full sales pitch, or even a full blown article. My submission day is Wednesday, but this one was just too good to pass up… the pictures (although grainy, sorry) pretty much speak for themselves. It’s just something to think about, or an easy little diversion to run when you’re bored and everyone else is offline.
-Iso
*Bonus Points for making a /yell “BLADES OF LIGHT!!!” macro to go off when it procs, lol.

I've had a guy proc this weapon on me like three times while defending a flag in WSG, I just grabbed it and left him spinning there hopelessly. Any respectable twink wouldn't use this item, specially since MM makes for a better weapon at this level (for free, that is.) It looks pretty rad though, and if you have multiple targets dumb enough to stand near you when it goes off it's pretty effective.

Ah yeah... it's uselessness in PvP was assumed.
Attention Noobs: Take it off in Battlegrounds! The spinning pirouette of destruction becomes a big neon sign shouting KILL ME when your opponents are human. PvE mobs will rush forward trying to wrap their lips around the blade, though.
Even if you're at level 42, this thing is a steaming pile in the 40-49 bracket... you'd do much better with a level 22 green than this thing.

I have to say, it is one of the more sexier looking axes in the game.

Because I am such a nerd, with nothing better to do than to fantasize about pixilated items in my spare time. No, but really... you just like to farm that axe so you can perve on Herod. :p

Nononono.
You're all wrong. It's easy to stop this thing from proccing. I used this axe exclusively up until level 46, then put it away until I could get better gear to make up for the loss of DPS it would incur.
You can interrupt the axe at anytime by using an action button or hitting [Esc], it's not hard. If you're the mouse-clicking type, you can also just remove the buff that it gives you.
Of course, sometimes you just want to let the thing proc, even if it isn't doing anything 'useful' because it just looks so darn cool.

My last living strat run, we did it to try to get an orb for a guildie. we got 10 orb. I enchanted my mining pick with crusader. It's dumb, but it piss off people who cant afford that enchant.

It's not hard, but still don't work.
I hope you know you can't right-click the debuff? you know it right?
The only "reliable" way I found to stop the proc is casting something with my pally. Cast, interrupt it and continu what you were doing.
Bandaging prolly work but you waste a bandage and put that useless debuff on you for nothing.
I'll try to get one on my warrior to see what can be done to stop that proc.

i have to admit, i don't have one myself, but i'll probably pick one up tonight while the guild runs AV until their anuses explode. from what i understand, though, "once it starts, there ain't no stoppin".
as for mining ore or skinning something to stop the spinning... umm... i have no response to that.

The Axe isn't nice for it's lvl though, so many other weapons to get... Oh well, for the Alliance that is. Bonebiter is from doing a full SM run, 38.8 DPS, 20 Str and 10 Stamina, and no lvl requirement, so you can get it at lvl 34 (when you can start the quest) with some help from a friend ofcourse.
And digging into my dark past I'm sure you can stop the spinning, I could simply pop on a seal and it would stop. Every 'other' action you take will stop the spinning.

Nice hammer....my 44th warrior has one. It procs more on lower levels which is annoying.
I have discovered that if you use another skill/spell i.e. sunder, whilst the weapon procs it will bring you out of it so that you can do other things like ....not die.

My first thought is that would be good to use on the Panther fight in ZG. Would make a warriors job much easier holding panthers rather than just relying on demo. shouts.

When we were levelling up some hordeness on Arthas one of my shaman buddies had one of these. Shit would get so irritating after like 4-5 hours of hanging with him. Just hearing that damned whirlwind effect go off constantly. Reminded me of how annoying spell casting sound effects were in shadowbane...
I think it would have been much better if it also made your character scream BLADES OF LIGHT!! everytime it procced. Like with an actual voice over. Yeah.

I got this thing on my shaman back in January and there was absolutely nothing I could do to get that proc to stop, they must have changed it.

Used to have it on my shaman for running people through instances, then i realised it was easier to tell people to fook off. I remeber fighting people who had it while i was leveling various alts, when ever it procced it basicly equaled a free HK.
Dont forget to loot all the scarlet pupil dudes who come after him, they drop a pimp tabard.

Hah, I got this on my Shaman about a year ago. Was pretty excited at first. The proc quickly became highly annoying and I just sold the damn thing.
Glad to see that it can be put to good use though.

What makes this axe even more hilarious is that when it procs, it triggers the Arms talent Second Wind. Free 10% heal and AE!

I ran SM Arm many times, but this baby never dropped, then i got DW and forgot about it. However, Lyceum is a hard nut to crack, i might go back to SM and get it. Looks nice, doesn't have stats, but it does have that AoE. A weapon switching macro to stop it while proccing is the most reliable way to handle it. And it looks cool, cooler than Kang if you ask me - same model, but different color.

I remember the good ol' days where I could whip this baby out and spin for 45 sec non-stop. Almost single-handedly took out the green dragonkin groups in Sunken Temple. I stopped using it when they "fixed" it to prevent me from doing 900+ dps in Zul Gurrub against the spiders. Warrior AOE ftw!

yeah, you can turn it off now. in fact, it's really easy to screw the proc up now apparently... you need to make sure and not hit anything or it will break the proc. which is good (for being able to stop it) and bad (for button mashers).

and who said i can't get a stiffy? d00d, wtf?!

They practically are.
Prices on my server have crashed. I see ppl trying to firesale a lot of 60-specific goods--especially orbs. Whereas they use to go for ~50G standard, the current asking price is between 20-30G.

FYI as a Shaman you can still cast while in the spin, I ran SM for a while and off tanked so when it proc'd I Knew I was going to be sitting there for a while so I would cast healing spells or Lightning bolts or chain lightning since I knew I was going to be sitting there for 9 seconds anyway. It is really sweet to be swirling with a lightning animation going.
Too bad they nerfed Rockbiter though, I was still using this puppy to off tank/heal. (54 sham)
